Regarding Tortuguero National Park: It is on a rainforest-covered sandbar whose beaches are a major nesting site for green turtles. The Sea Turtle Conservancy runs a research station and visitor center, with turtle-related exhibits. The parks freshwater canals, wetlands and forests shelter wildlife like jaguars, tapirs and manatees. Regarding Barra de Colorado Wildlife Refuge: The refuge protects 92,000 ha of beach, estuary, marine, freshwater riverine, and tropical rainforest-lowland habitats ranging in elevation from sea level to 751 feet. This remote region is only accessible by plane or boat. The rivers and lagunas of Barra de Colorado are an excellent choice for a boat ride to see any of the thousands of birds and plants, mammals, reptiles and amphibians in and along the river.
